The Ritz Cinema

On a happier note, the Ritz Cinema in Westgate hosted a congenial visit from members of the family of the Darlington entrepreneur Walter Power, who took over the semi-derelict Mechanics Institute, and set up the first cinema in the town, which still operates, after more than 115 years.

The Severn family, which has now dispersed away from Yorkshire, has visited their old ancestral stamping ground, and the Powers grave in the town graveyard, but never come to the Ritz before.
